Concept art usually refers to the earlier design of complicated visual projects with multiple working departments, for example animation, film and digital game. It mainly help testing visual effects for the director to choose suitable ones in order to direct the following development of the project. There are a variety of subdivisions, such as environment, character and keyframe design, etc. According to the technology being used, it can also be devided to 2D and 3D areas. It is similiar to illustration, both of which are about to communicate an idea. However, concept art emphasized more on the "idea" part, and more importantly, it is not directly communicate to the audience/viewer like what illustration does, instead it mainly communicates the idea to the developer for the following processes. In this blog I mainly discuss about environmental concept art and keyframe design, which have the most crossovers with illustration and they are my main directions in professional practice.
